Kratom Strains Explained

Mitragyna speciosa (kratom) is a tropical deciduous and evergreen tree in the coffee family. Kratom Science has gathered information to help you learn about the different strains and discover which one is right for you.

Bali kratom is commonly known as “premium commercial” quality kratom. It is the most well known kratom on the internet.

Maeng Da has been historically used for various purposes, but many find its energizing, yet still relaxing, properties to be most the unique and beneficial.

Red Kratom strains feels a lot like a traditional kratom. They are highly regarded for their pain relieving attributes. Maeng Da is known as one of the best examples of a premium red strain.

White kratom strains generally have the full range of kratom alkaloids. As a result, these strains are regarded for their noted euphoriating, stimulating aroma.

Green strains are notorious for their distinct ability to combine the pain relieving properties of a red strain with the energetic boost of a white strain. Bali is the most well known green strain.

Many kratom extracts are a reformulation of a classic kratom strain. They are a potent alkaloidal extract of kratom thats reapplied to powdered leaf. This results in a significantly more concentrated version of kratom.

  1. I have serious RLS which has only been manageable with opioids. Now, however, treatment is being denied due to Medicaire cuts, so I have the double challenge of going off 11 years use of methadone and tramadol and keeping the RLS as well controlled as possible at the same time. I will be able to go off the opioids and tramadol gradually but go off them I must and the RLS is of a killing level – it will allow no sleep at all if left untreated, so there is no choice about leaving it untreated. What variety of Kratom should I order? I am new to Kratom, so almost clueless, yet in a position where I have to jump right in.

    1. My thoughts are with you – Opioids, in my opinion are THE most overprescribed drug on the market. Kudos for looking into Cannabis for some of your pain relief! As a recovering addict, I’ve found Kratom to be a Godsend- depending on the strain and dosage, you can go from “I’m a happy lump on the couch” to “I feel like cleaning the house.” Generally, the Red Strains are the most sedating, Maeng Da is typically the most uplifting/ energy producing. Usually, capsules are 600mg of powder- I’d start with 2400mg as you appear to have a tolerance to Opioids built up. One thing about Kratom- this isn’t like smoking a joint – it takes around 30 minutes for the effects to kick in. Also, I would give CBD a try (Google is your friend)…. helps when you have a pain flare up and need some quick relief. And, it’s got NO THC, so, it can be purchased online. Good luck!!

      1. Opioids are most certainly NOT overprescribed. That is part of the DEA’s panic-inducing propaganda. Many of us have a diagnosed pain condition that hasn’t responded to any other type of treatment. It is very difficult to get opioid treatment, and even when you do, the urine testing, etc, from the pain management docs is stringent. Please don’t tell someone suffering from severe chronic pain that his only effective treatment is being “overprescribed”. I think underprescribed is more accurate, and more barbaric.

        1. They are extremely overprerscribed. You are not the one who has daily intense chronic pain that does not respond to many treatments. Opiates actually increase inflammation while only “numbing” your pain. That’s why you feel even worse once they wear off. Not to mention the numerous other severe issues they cause. Even death. I’ve suffered from chronic daily pain my entire life. Nothing has ever helped either. Dr prescribed pain meds and I became addicted. My pain not only intensified but it caused me to bed ridden. My pain was horrible before pain meds but after, I wanted to die. I started taking Kratom 2 years ago and I’m a completely different person. It saved my life. Not only has it decreased my pain but it helped with depression, insomnia, RLS, …. I can’t even list all the benefits. I only have to take it twice a day whereas the pain meds I was having to take more and more and more often. I got to the point I was taking 10 oxycodone 30 mil a day. The difference in Kratom and opiates, Kratom is a plant, pain meds are man made in a lab. Everyone on pain meds are skeptical before they try Kratom. “Ohh this isn’t going to help my pain. Nothing but pain meds helps”. I seriously suggest you try Kratom before you say pain meds are the only thing that helps. Then you will realize that pain meds are definitely overperscribed. It’s sickening.

        2. I’ve seen a study about using oxycodone in conjunction with a microdose of an opiate antagonist, naloxone, and I mean a very small dose of naloxone. It was showing the difference in tolerance with and without the naloxone. In the study baseline, patients reported taking oxycodone for only three days before their subjective pain level became higher than before they started taking anything. The only time their pain level would go down was about 45 minutes after dosing and the rest of the time they were more miserable than they were without medication. The point of the study was that adding about .2 milligrams of naloxone with every dose (to cycle the oxycodone off the opiate receptors, I suppose), kept the subjective pain levels much lower. But to me the striking part of the study was the fact that oxycodone almost immediately starts doing more harm than good, but patients apparently become addicted so quickly that they can’t see the forest for the trees…. Oxy, and morphine, etc. are clearly not helpful for long term pain control, but pharmaceutical companies push things they can sell more of, and addicted patients aren’t going to argue. And then there’s the doctors, who sat in classroom lectures for a few years and think they know better than both the people who responsibly use and those who have had their lives ruined by it. Some will shovel it out for a toothache, some want you to take Tylenol for an amputation. The whole system of control is absurd. Now you have Kratom, which affects the same receptors and causes similar withdrawal, and nobody is getting hurt by it to speak of, any more than they are hurt by caffeine addiction. The DEA and the FDA are freaking out about it because supposedly 15 or 50 people have died, depending who you ask, and more people will die in the next few years from tripping over fat dogs, but nobody will suggest banning Corgis. Its so obvious that the whole system is solely designed to push pills and make money for Perdue and the other drug companies. How else can a company make 15 or 20 dollars off a single dose of morphine, when the same dose can be found in it’s natural state on a poppy plant for about a nickel? By making the drug illegal. And anyone who wants to can go to a clinic and get signed up for the mother of all moneywasting, timewasting, superpotent man-made addictions available, methadone. Only 4 or 5 grand a year. And these addicts are so exhausted from struggling with prohibition that they are grateful for it. I guess my point overall is that the only way to help people is to educate them about medicine and keep the government and big business as far away from it as possible. Otherwise you just get scarcity, methadone clinics, outrageous drug prices and misinformation, with no effect on the number of users whatsoever…

      2. I agree with you 100%!!! They give them out like candy just so you will have to keep coming back to get more.. herbs heal. Pills kill.

    2. I also have severe RLS and was on ropinirole, then gabapentin to wean off the ropinirole. But gabapentin can cause rapid weight gain, I gained about 8 lbs in two months even though my appetite was down. I then switched to 1mg clonazepam and begin using kratom to help me wean off clonazepam. I’m down to .5 mg clonazepam using 1.5 – 2 g of kratom about an hour before bed. I sleep well with no RLS symptoms. In another few weeks I’ll quit taking Clonazepam and use only kratom

I’ve been using red Borneo, red bali and red hulu, they work!

  2. Hi I’m wondering about dosage I’ve been on Meat on for a few months now I don’t take it everyday but I find I need 6 grams to feel anything doesn’t that seem high to You? Anyone?

    1. Yes, that’s a fairly high dose. And, I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that you’ve picked ONE strain and haven’t switched it up?? Kratoms the same as any other substance- over time, you build up a tolerance. Try another strain or two before going back to your favorite one. Good luck!

      1. First time i tried kratom was like 3 weeks ago.was given 2oz of red kali.not sure the brand or to guage quality..was in extreme back pain and took a nice tablespoon.when i weighed another it was in the 6g range.within 20 min i felt 100% better.the sweet spot i found was 5/6g…overdid it a few days later with 10g

    2. Hi sweetie I’m a 45 year old female I weigh 155 pounds and I’m 5’6 I take 35 grams sometimes I take 45. I mix a red Bali with a white maeng da and green maeng da. And I will take that every 5 hours. It really depends on your tolerance level and how long you have been taking it. You can’t OD . You would just throw up first. If you find you need a higher dose for your pain or anxiety I would suggest taking a couple gravol half hour before you take your kratom

  3. Good day I am so happy I found your web site, I really found you by error,
while I was browsing on Google for something else, Nonetheless I am here now and would just like to say

more, Please do keep up the fantastic job.

  4. I just recently moved from MD to SC 10 days ago. I was clinic prescribed Suboxon aka Zubzolve for 14 months. Being as they are opiot blockers, I was not getting high from either, so I had no CLUE how sick I would become on my 3rd day here. If I had the energy at the time I surely would have drove back to MD to get SomeThing !! Anything!! But by the Grace of God!! I found kranom on the web. Never heard of it before. But when I walked in the smoke shop and told the lady how miserable I was she knew exactly what I needed. I’ve been taking Red Horn Kranom for 6 days now and I haven’t felt this good, confident, strong and emotionally together in 20yrs. Now thanks to Kranom I’m ready to start my new life!!😂

  5. After 4 yrs suffering at my unwillingness to fix a torn meniscus, had to replace my L knee, now i took at least 12-500’s daily but u gotta work, i was told n to the head shop i went 4-$50 a piece, i replace 1 vik every 4 days but didnt feel the need to exceed 6 kratoms (?800’s) n 2 months i was off the viks ( wow no w/drawl crazy) n finished off the kratoms 2a day , because i paid for them lol

  6. Im getting ready to take my first dose of kratom. I do about a half gram of heroin a day. How many capsules how many times a day should i take of the maeng da silver capsules? Thanks you

  7. I’ve been a heroin addict for 5 years today is my 3rd day clean and 3rd day on kratom im still withdrawing but not as bad as I would, I’m on red vain and iso extract currently 20oz of red vain and 2grams of iso its okay but I’m looking for something to maintain what strains would you recomend. Also now that I’m cleaning up I seem to have a very high pulse rate and I am struggling to sleep at night any input would be very appreicated. Also I’m new to this but I thank god for putting this on earth 🌎 .

    1. I hope you’re still clean. Kratom is a godsend to us opiate addicts. I’m 4 months clean and find that maeng da is what I prefer to give me energy. You know how doing anything is a struggle and you have no energy? Maeng da helps. I also like to switch strains and white Borneo is my other favorite. Some strains are relaxing, like Bali so try that at night to help you relax and sleep, but be aware that while you’re in the first week of detox you will be agitated and tachycardic pretty much no matter what you do. Hot baths are your bff during the first 10 days.

Also, there is a gas station in my town that is part smoke shop. They sell bongs, pipes, and kratom, which is professionally packaged and even has the nutritional panel on it which says one capsule has 600 mg kratom in it (and a DV isn’t established by the FDA disclaimer). It’s literally 4x the price of buying online though, so I don’t buy it unless I am waiting on a large order to come in. I trust the gas station kratom more than some dubious online retailers who say “not for human consumption” on their labels, though I know they must say that because it’s illegal in some states.

    2. Bro do u have access to Cannabis?… I came off methadone with Using Cannabis. U gotta eat it though… It gets in u ALOT stronger with what I think is added benefits. I cannot recommend it enough.. Just get it ur body. It will help u exponentially. It will also help u dissect ur problems. It is so good for self examination. Use it as a God given tool for ur wellbeing. So glad u r coming off of that. Good for u. Kratom will help a shit ton as well. I use Maeng Da but u may be doing well with what u have. MD is more energy.. Borneo has worked for me too just gotta find ur strain. Oh and Be careful I’d u r eating weed.. Lol.. U will b OK but it can get interesting. Hope I didn’t ramble top much. Take care.

    3. SavdBy- congrats Bro!! I detoxed at home from Fentanyl and Oxycodones….I WISH I had known about this substance sooner! It made my withdrawal symptoms MUCH more manageable! BTW, have you tried CBD? That is a legal extract from Cannabis which has also brought relief from symptoms and sleeplessness. I’d recommend Cannabis, but, unless you’re in a State where it’s legal, I’d say stick to legal substances.

LOL…. I’m going to guess there are 12 Steppers who are know yelling at their phone/ computer saying “You’re STILL using a substance! CRUTCH CRUTCH!” Whatever. Sobriety is NOT a “one-size-fits-all” solution! Zealots.

      1. As to the so called Dr. Phil. What difference does it make weather it is a placebo . The product obviously works for people.
If we really want to talk about what is legitimate or not, Phil should consider the yarns he spins with his aw shucks wisdom and stop using the title of Doctor as a placebo for his own agenda.

  8. Alexander G Carlisle IV

I have chronic back and shoulder pain, also ADD, And PTSD. I AM needing to know the best strain for myself……

  9. I haven’t tried krantom yet. I’ve had multiple surguries and have been on pain meds for many years. I smoke marijuana to help with my daily living. It helps with pain, energy, appitite, sleep, relaxing and mood. I is there any krantom that does all of this. Marijuana is legal for medical where I live, but it’s not cheap. Any help our advice would be appreciated. I’ve never had an addictive personality and don’t get sick if I don’t take my meds. But I prefer to take what god grows rather than what man makes. Thank you and MERRY CHRISTMAS

    1. I would say Maeng da green. It seemed to be well round as far as pain management, it isn’t sedating in my experience, great for depression and anxiety as well. Of all the.varieties I have tried it seemed to be a well rounded medicine for almost any ailment I can think of. I a faced paced physical job and Maeng da green is able to stop my migraines dead in their tracks while keeping me clear headed, energetic, and jovial. Hope this helps 🙂

  10. I am looking for some answers. I use Kratom Bali and Maeng Da 125mg for pain from three back surgeries. The first being a fusion eleven years ago. I was seriously addicted to pain meds. The Kratom I use has help tremendously for pain and energy and I highly recommend. The problem I’m having is it is causing severe insomnia when it is time to sleep. What type of Kratom would you recommend to help me sleep?

  11. I’ve just taken Kratom for the first time today and have had unbelievable results. I was able to focus better, multi-task, answers to questions came faster. I run a business and it is crucial for me to be on point for the duration of the day as I am the final say so in every decision. I had no side effects, and was please with over-all results. I will say that I will now go through an online carrier as the gas stations have a bit of a mark up and selection is poor.

    1. Why in the hell would you buy Kratom from a gas station? How did you even find a gas station that sells kratom in the first place?! That is just beyond strange. Yeah, that’s the last place I would ever buy anything that I’d be consuming, unless it’s a candy bar or a bag of chips. lol

      1. So don’t commenting something you have no knowledge of. They sell it at gas stations and smoke shops and have brand name products.

        1. I agree. It’s all over many had stations, and head shops. Gad stations are cheaper than head shops. Online is even cheaper yet. Depends on the state for the gas station pricing. Mississippi gas stations are currently at $36.99 for a hundred grams. Online is $47.99 for 200 grams. Illinois gas stations are at just over $1.00 per gram ($31.99 for 30 grams). Kentucky stations are at $49.99 for 3oz. or 84 grams). That covers a little of the Midwest to the southeast. I have a home in MS, and IL so sometimes I have to buy in different states depending on where I am working at the time, or staying for the length of a job assignment.

          1. Yeah, I’m in Minnesota and, in the smoke shops, it’s $1.00/g, so it definitely seems to be worth getting it in bulk online instead. I’ve had a perfect experience with Bali (stores here don’t have a variety at all) and I’m wanting to try the others for (adult) ADHD and anxiety. Works like a charm. 🤘

        2. That’s right. Here in Oregon I find Kratom in smoke shops and off-brand convenience stores. Very convenient. I never even knew what this stuff was until last week. I saw some signs up saying “we have Kratom” and I thought hey, what’s that?? I had never heard about if before coming here even though I’m from CA. Little did I know, it’s just a part of the coffee plant, but it has real medicinal properties, that’s excellent. I’m a big supporter of weed everywhere, because it’s either harmless, helpful or lifesaving, and I’m so glad to see something else that is almost as good, and can be easily accessed anywhere in the US. Fantastic! Another wonderful herb from natures pharmacy that can help people. Hopefully the govt will stay ignorant about it, so they don’t try to keep this away from millions who need it, like they succeeded in doing with Cannabis for so long (well not that it necessarily kept it away, but it sure made a punk cop’s job easy for him if he happened to find some on you. As if in a sane society that should be a punishable offense. Too bad millions of weak-minded slaves were easily convinced it was and many still are more than comfortable still agreeing to this. Always stunning to a sane person of decency like myself what slaves in the public will so quickly let the interests of power tell them to do and think, even when it’s ludicrous or immoral on its face. But that’s another discussion for a different place and time.)
